COURSE DELIVERY

The Planning Practice Course is available in two modes of delivery:

  • Face-to-face over two full days; or
  • On-line over a two-week block.

In both modes of delivery, the content and structure of each unit is the same. Participants receive a resource book, which includes readings and activities that cover the course content. Participants are guided through the material by the facilitator, with regular opportunities to consider and discuss relevant experiences and issues from their own practice. The value of the Course is enriched by interaction between participants from a range of backgrounds, practice areas and experience.

In face-to-face delivery mode, topics may be covered in summary by the facilitator to maximise time for during the session for discussion and activity. On-line delivery mode is self-paced and uses 'threaded' discussions to allow people to contribute as they reach (and reflect on) each topic. The use of the threaded format provides flexibility to ensure that participants can contribute at any time; including from international time zones.

UNIT ASSESSMENT

Satisfactory completion of a Planning Practice Course unit requires an individual to demonstrate competence in relation to the 'learning outcomes' prescribed for the unit. The learning outcomes relate to the course content, and require participants to reflect on their experiences, apply what they have learned to real situations and to engage with best practice or current issues. Each unit includes two pieces of assessment to determine whether participants have achieved the competence set for the unit.

  • A short answer test is given at the end of the face-to-face delivery.
  • A 500-word paper is required to be submitted six (6) weeks after the course date.

Both elements of the assessment must be passed in order to satisfactorily complete the unit. (All assessment for four units must be passed to satisfactorily complete the Planning Practice Course.) Credit transfer in respect of Course units is available to individuals who meet the required criteria.

COURSE COSTS

The costs of participation in a Course unit (including course notes and marking of assessment pieces) are as follow:

Delivery PIA members Others
Face-to-Face delivery $675 per head $800 per head
Online delivery $550 per head $600 per head

The cost of a face-to-face session includes lunch and morning and afternoon tea for the two-day session. All prices are GST inclusive (and quoted in Australian dollars).

Each year, a calendar of Planning Practice Course units is developed. The calendar schedules dates for 'public sessions' of the Course (both face-to-face and on-line) up to twelve months in advance. Once dates are publicised, enrolments can be made. Places in each session are limited (minimum of 10, maximum of 25) to ensure participants a high-quality learning experience.

If sufficient interest is indicated, additional sessions can be arranged for any Course unit in any delivery mode (and in any Australian metropolitan or regional location). For information about an additional session, contact PIA National Education & Membership Manager at education@planning.org.au or call (02) 6262 5933.

IN-HOUSE SESSIONS

All Course units are available for 'in-house' delivery where an 'host' can muster a group for a particular date and topic. This offers the opportunity, for example, for an employer to run the programs in response to business needs, including outside normal business hours (e.g. Friday and Saturday) to reduce the impact on productive time and share some of the load and benefits between employers and staff. There is a flat fee of $7000 to host an in-house session, plus the host is responsible for the facilitator's travel and accommodation costs, and any venue or catering arrangements.
